Forget rubrail for yet another reason; they are for rubbing up on a dock. Anyone ever tried boarding, getting into, loading, a kayak at a dock knows it leads to a classic comedy of a newbie kayaker getting wet while getting experience. Load your kayak on the shore, then launch parallel to shore and board it when it's in the water. Whatever you do, end of season you are touching up paint or varnish anyway, rubrail or plain deck edge.
