Don't shorten the bilge panels---they're the right length. What happens is that the bilge panels are drawn together at the stern to form a "bottlenosed" hollow. This built-in "skeg" is what gives the Mill Creek its good tracking.

Just make sure it's not an abrupt, "pinched" curve, by overtightening the wires back there. Should be a gentle curve. That whole section becomes almost solid epoxy later, when you apply the fillets to the interior.
