Rick...It's pretty much a toss-up whether to build from kit or plans. I don't think you'll save any money building from plans but if you can get good local supplies, go for it. I built mine from plans and spent about $1400 complete. You'll probably add 3-4 days extra fabricating your parts but it's fun. It was complete in about 5 months working evenings.
You'll have lots of room as a stern paddler but you'd be uncomfortable in the bow seat.
I documented my plans build on the attached slide show. You can click on each slide for a short narrative.
The Mill Creek seems to be very popular lately. There's another thread of discussion on the model a little further down the page. I think it's a great choice.
