I second the vote for the Sasafras 12. It's an excellent first boat to build from plans. There are only five simple panel shapes and all twenty panels can be laid out and cut, four at a time, from stacked 2' by 8' pieces of plywood. Two sheets of 4mm plywood, six quarts of epoxy and ash strips for gunnels and you have a boat that the children can uee when they grow up.
