Applying glue to one side of the joint is not necessarily fatal, provided you use enough of it. If you have some visible cracks You either did not use enough, or it was too thin and dribbled out of the joint. The mix for scarfing should not drip off the mixing stick. I think they show that in the video.
How to fix? Charlie's heat gun suggestion is the best way. try not to scorch the wood, and sand down the joint surfaces before trying again.
