I agree. Go get wet. I have heard of letting the final coat dry hard and then it buffing out, but that ain't my style.

It would be very difficult to varnish a small patch and not have it be visible - much more visible than the bug tracks, and the bug tracks make for a much more interesting story.

It won't be your last coat of varnish, because a season or two and you'll have scrapes and scratches to coat over.

But I like varnishing, so I'd perfectly understand if you decided to put on another coat anyway. Either way, you can't go wrong at this point.
