Larry,

The minute you put that boat in the water and start paddling it, those bug tracks are going to be the least of your worries. No perfect varnish finish ever survives first contact with the carrying racks, canoe dock, launch ramp, paddle, etc. It's time to declare it finished and go paddling.

But if you really feel that you must carry on, sanding and applying new varnish leaves a visible transition. I think you're looking at another coat.

And I never heard of anyone dedicated enough to perfection as to polish the final coat of varnish (but maybe I just hang around with the wrong crowd).
