varnish touch-up?

So, after making every effort to perfectly apply my final coat of varnish the deck, I awoke this morning to find that an insect must have skittered across the finish in a few places. the marks are relatively small (1/8" x 1"), and are located near the back of the cockpit coaming. Any way to touch this up without having to lay down another coat of varnish? I'm thinking of some light sanding with 400 wet, then just brushing on a thin coat of varnish just on the affected area. Any thoughts? Also, do most folks just leave the last coat as is? Anybody do any sanding/polishing to complete the finish? Thanks!
