Having seen pictures of people with dogs and small kids in what is supposed to be the hatch, if you really want to do something, my thoughts went to several variations of taking a CH16 or 17 and moving the front hatch back as far as possible and making it a little larger (which is a good idea anyway). Putting your son in there to ride. After he gets his own boat, you can put the hatch cover on and continue to paddle the same boat. If this gets too much weight forward, add some to the stern for balance. Just a thought.
