When to scarf

Hi, I'm soon to start building my first S&G kayak (Chesapeake 17). Just wondering when people scarf the plywood sheets together: when still whole (i.e. join the whole sheets, then layout cuts on them), cut into thinner straight strips for each piece, or once parts are cut out?
