Alan,

This is the kind of thing that drives people at certain government agencies crazy. Even today, photo-interpretation is more art than science.

While I do respect your opinion, to me that picture looks more like a classic rock-hits-seam scratch. It looks as if it started at the right and moved across the seam's high point to the left. It seems to have scraped of some paint first, then around the thumb it got into some epoxy, and finally it got a really good grip on the glass and gouged some fibers, hence the white.

So I don't think it's as bad as it appears to you.
