Tony...if you decide to varnish the deck first, just be sure that you can somehow support the boat upside down without contact with the varnish. The varnish is easily marred before it is fully cured (a few weeks/month possibly).

I recently varished the deck of my Mill Creek. I then supported it bottom-up with stands through the hatch openings and clamped to my work stands so that I could paint the hull. It worked out well for me.
