Painting Hull Stripe

I finished painting the hull of our Mill Creek 16.5 earlier this week (4 coats of Brightside -white). I'd like to add a 2" stripe of colour just below the rub rail. What is the best way to accomplish this? Should I mask off the area then lightly sand and then paint? Can I leave the masking tape on for the duration (2-3 coats)or should I re-mask each time?
