From my own experience, the leathers that I put on my oars were small enough that when they were stitched on (while dry) and pulled tight, they came out very snug. They have served well for over a year now. As for the button, I cut a bevel in the ends, and glued them on with contact cement, as called for in the instructions. I was dubious about that, since the contact cement seemed to me to be like weak office rubber cement. But they have held up well so far. The photo here shows a button newly glued, and held in place with a temporary leather tie.
