The pic really helps! I'll confess, however, I'm still a little sketchy regarding the whole process. If you get a chance, I'd love to see pics of the junction. I assumed you used a table saw to cut the notch? If so, must've presented some close "finger work" even with a fence and feather board. I'm impressed!
