And actually, there are some channels set aside just for chit chat between vessels. Thjose marked on that chart as "Non-commercial" are used for inter vessel talk of a random nature.

Be aware also that it isn't legal to use the VHF while ashore, unless you have a station license such as a marina might use.

One other point- commercial traffic in the ICW uses Ch 16 EXCEPT for between the Mississippi River and the Houston Ship Channel. In that area they use channel 13. Bridges use 13 and locks use 14.

And contrary to what some will tell you, you do not need a license to use a VHF inside the states. you DO need one if you go foriegn with your VHF.
