Re: Eastport mast and boo

Mahagony? Built a sprit rig for a similar sized sailing pram. The mast was glued up from 4 billets cut from two-by-fours (bigbox store)and the sprit was made from a piece of redwood salvaged from an old outhouse I tore down. By gluing up the mast from billets I was able to make it hollow and guarantee that every knot was supported by an adjacent piece of clear wood. If the spars are sealed with epoxy the species of wood in not too important. They will only get wet if it rains. The only real considerations are, first, you don't want the spars to be excessively heavy. And, second, you may want your spars to have a furniture quality look. You can pull that off by using a dark marine varnish.
