I like and endorse Charlie's bow compartment; it looks good, adds flotation, and you never really sit or stand that far forward anyway. Simply decking the boat back another three feet to create a larger sealed bow compartment would do the same thing if you can figure out how to handle the mast step. That and some foam under the side decks would add large measures of reserve buoyancy. (A lot of boats like this have no flotation at all, and while they won't sink they're hard to bail out.)

I'll bet more than half of the Sharpie builders rigged some sort of hatch in the stern compartment. I'd get one of the Beckson watertight access hatches and put that in the stern bulkhead.
