John's Sharpie deck mods
Posted by Randy on May 2, 2007
Has anyone modified the deck shape on a John's Sharpie? I am considering giving mine more foredeck with a coaming. Having never sailed one, I am interested to know where most of the water enters the boat so that I can determine how far aft to bring the coaming.
Also, is the large overhang around the dagger board trunk necessary for lateral bracing of the dagger board? If not, I'd like to carve it a little closer to the daggerboard in order to fit some removeable seats there.
Lastly, while I realize the utility of having more flotation by sealing the rear compartment, I hate to lose the space for storage as I intend to camp out of the boat. Does anyone have experience or speculation about making a hatch and sealing it well with a gasket?
Thanks, Randy
