I used a 3/4 inch hole saw and drilled a hole through the block for the ropes ot pass through. It makes the monster wooden block looks tons smaller and keeps the ropes pulling straight into the rudder. If you do this be sure that you radius the edges of the hole so that they create the minimum drag on the ropes.

The steering cables should be well to the sides of the wooden block if they are mounted per the assembly instructions.
