I wouldn't build a boat without them. And I think the black deck lines look nice on the boat. I like to kayak at Lake Erie and it can get a little rough. We were out when the north wind kicked up 5-7 foot swells and I got wiped out when coming in to the shore. Being able to hold the deck lines was necessary to stay with the boat. If you are going to paddle in smooth water it is not necessary. If you plan to get into any rough water put them on. My $.02.
