I have an old fashioned high pressure spray painting set-up with quality guns and I wouldn't bother using them for varnishing because cleaning the stuff is a lot of extra work. I roll varnish on with cheap rollers, tip off the bubbles with a foam brush, throw the rollers and brush in the trash, wash my hands and I'm done. Also, rolling/tipping is intuative and spraying is not. In the trade runs were called "hangers" and easy to get if your technique was off.
