It is a good idea to install the gasket on the back of the hatch rather than the sill so it does not get beat up while putting gear into the compartment.

I do not see the need for both a rim and a sill. A rim is good to hide a sloppy hatch cutout but I would rather use a sill than a rim to keep spray-in-the-face protrusions on the front deck to a minimum.
