they aren't necessary. Although thin strips of mahogany are attractive they aren't necessary.
Gunwales,outwales, rubrails are worthwhile for big boats.
They're structurally necessary for canoes.
A kayak with 6oz hull glass plus 4oz deck glass wrapover (12oz if it's 6oz deck glass) gives you a 10oz "rubrail" that's harder than mahogany.
