Hatch Fitting Question

After a "careless" job in cutting my hatches and subsequent sanding of the hatch opening, I now find that there is a section where there is a 1/4" gap between the edge of the hatch cover and the surrounding deck. When doing the final installation, of course there will be "weatherstripping" under the hatch cover, but are there any other steps I should be taking to close that gap?
