Sounds to me like too much power. Even if you paddle too fast, the stern will sink lower in the water. The kayak is a displacement type hull , not a planing hull and therefore it has a maximum speed . I used to put a 12 lb thrust motor on my Mill Creek and that was just the right amount of power and I would keep level with my friends who were paddling. try it on low speed and get a lend of a GPS if you don't have one and see how fast you are going and report back.
