The half-thickness approach might work best if the insert was of a stiffer material, like hardwood or epoxy/glass. You could hide it on the inside that way (if you wanted to hide it). With jigging like that, a stepped scarf would also be possible, which would look as neat as a butt.
A zig-zag cut at the panel ends would also work, but would be trickier to do than inserts. If an insert does not fit too well, you can make a new one.
Maybe I need to look at the glue failure problem. An all-cabosil mix seems to be too brittle for this application.
