Is this a Chesapeake? I've built a lot of the Chesapeakes from plans---the very first ones, in particular.

The trick is to first get the general deck shape right, sans cockpit hole. Then position the deck on the hull to get a rough idea of where the deckbeam and the rear bulkhead sit. Use the cockpit template from the plans to mark the shape on the deck, but don't cut the shape out to the lines---leave a few inches extra all the way around. At this stage you have approximately what comes in the kit. You'll trim the extra deck off.
