Plans built cockpit

For us plans builders, without a precut fore and aft deck with the cockpit already cut into the two pieces,I have this question. How does one cut the cockpit. It seems like you would already have to have the deck in position to tell where to cut it in. If I find the center line on the fore and aft deck while they are clamped on temporarily, in final position, can I just lay the cockpit coaming over this and trace inside this for a proper placement? Any tips or suggestions will be much appreciated.
