Guitar finishers normally do their sunbursts and other graduated effects using an airbrush between layers of clear laquer. The degree of transparency is controlled by the amount of paint that is airbrushed on. This would not be so easy with airosols, which don't have the fine control of an airbrush. A thin coat from an airosol tends to look spotty. I would do some experimenting before putting paint on the kayak, but you can always wipe off your mistakes (carefully). Use a rag wth some thinners on it, before the paint dries fully. Oh yes, and the paint neeeds to be compatible with the varnish, or you might get a 'crackle' effect that was not part of the plan!
