Deck-sweeping jibs are more efficient, because air cannot spill off the foot when they are sheeted in. The downside is they create a big blind spot for the helmsman. On dinghies it's common to have PVC windows in jibs. Larger boats have a crew member peeping around the sail and telling the helmsman what's there (which might be an opponent with right of way!). Cruising boats go for the high-clewed style, giving good forward visibility.
