Sounds like your using too much wood powder which make your fillets dark, lumpy and harder to spread. Play with your mixture - add some colloidal silica to smooth it up. Once you get a good mixture, write it down. For the outside of the hull, I assume you mean filling the seams. Add some microlite to this mixture and mask the seams to keep the mix off the hull.
