Well, I'm not a pro but I play one at work. After is the proper answer. I usually start to feather the edge after the first fill coat. Roll on another fill coat and complete the feathering. Works for me anyway. Others probably do it differently but the result will be the same. And you know you're obligated to post pictures at some point.
