MD, You may also just want to consider a cell phone. Smaller, cheaper, programmed to call your wife & the coast guard and has better range. VHF is only line of sight -- about 2 miles. With cell coverage so good these days I don't leave home without mine. You also are not allowed to broadcast on land with a VHF. With my cell I can check the weather & the tides.

I have the Standard Horizon HX260S. Not much use. A HF radio would be the ticket!
