This topic was covered over on the kayakforum awhile back; you might do a search on it. FWIW (I've no personal experience on this) the consensus seemed to be you're better off dying the wood rather than the epoxy; as I recall, dying the epoxy simply obscured the wood grain, wasn't as attractive.
