shearwater hybrid compass

I've finished building the Shearwater 17 Hybrid (looks and paddles great). Now I'm about to mount a compass via a wooden block to the deck. Since the deck has a pretty big curve, the wooden block needs have that same curve cut out of it. Since I don't have a band saw, does anyone have any experience in the best way to cut out this inside curve? The block of wood is 6" square and will first have to be cut to a 6" circular shape. Then this inside curve about 3/4" deep needs to be cut into the bottom of the block. Any ideas?
