okume colors

Posted by George K on Oct 2, 2006

Okume comes in AA or AB. AA both sides are basically the same color. AB has a light side and a dark side, sorta like the force, or duct tape. But I digress. Color matching sheets from even the same batch can be tricky. Just get as close as you can and don't worry about it. The okume will darken with age on a bright finish boat, especially if you're in Florida, for instance, where there's quite a bit of UV. Even with seven coats of varnish (Epiphanes). I'm now using Resin Research epoxy on the exterior of all my boats as it has UV protection built in. Not had enough time to see if the okume will darken as much. Time will tell. It saves me two weeks of varnishing, however.

By the way, I'm heading back to the MASCF this weekend and will have my WR 18 and a San O 14 with me. Hope to see some of you there.
