You may be limited with the stock rack. You may need wider crossbars for what you want to do. I got a hybrid Yakima set-up with 58� bars for my Passagemaker (�02 WRX Wagon). It appears to be similar to what this guy did, although he has two towers as opposed to spreading the load longer along the car with the hybrid clamp system.
