Automotive clearcoat works great. I haven't used it, but I have seen plenty of kayaks that have it. It is harder than varnish. You will get fewer scratches. The UV protection is better, so you will not have to re-coat as often. The finish is clearer, so the wood will be lighter colored. The downside is that it will still get scratched some, and you will need to take it back to the spraybooth to get it repaired. It is a great finish, but it is not perfect.
