anti spam?

I know this bb had some trouble with bogus postings a while back and came up with a solution...in the veification code. I know next to nothing bout this stuff but the guys over at the connyak (CT sea kayak club) bb have been haveing a discusion about how to handle the junk postings. Does this verification code stuff work? Is it something that connyak could institute? I think kayakers need to band together to fight spam...and those dumb ass jet ski things.
