Hi,
All of the above are sound...
But the wise old sage Dynamite Payson (actually his wife Amy) came up with a potentially great solution - He describes it in his book "Instant Boats"...
i.) Open the can and stir.
ii.) Pour off as much as you need.
iii.) Next use the lid as a template to cut a circular sheet of waxed paper using a razor knife that will float down inside the can and rest on the surface of the fluid... The trick is to get the waxed paper so that it just fits inside the can... Not too big and not too small...
iv.) Close the can...
At least it sounds worthy of a try... Though I'd test it first on a sample to make sure that the varnish/wax combo didn't go berserk...
I've never used the technique, but Dynamite swears by it...
