Glad to see my colleagues are on the job...

I do differ with the use of the pan-pan: that's a mayday situation. If you're in the water and unable to gain re-entry after that long a period, better to issue a mayday.

Alas, we pull dead 'yakkers out of the water with some frequency in tehse parts. The usual problem is people who are overconfident about taking on the Pacific vis a vis their own abilities. But I'm damned if one out of a hundred take a VHF radio with them. After a PFD it should be the first piece of safety equipment anybody buys.
