Stuck hatches

So, after a sudden move and a year or more of non-use, the hatches on my Arctic Hawk are stuck fast. I did not try to open them with anything but human force (no lever on the handle for mechanical advantage). I was worried about damaging the rope handle and then really being up a creek. Any suggestions? The boat was stored in a dry basement with relatively constant humidity and temperature if that helps. Thanks
