Re: finishing techniques

Hi Bob,
My two cents follow...
* If you've sanded down to 240 grit, you should be ok...
* Next decide what brand of varnish you want, (Be sure it protects against UV) and then follow the manufacturer's directions to the letter concerning prepping and application of the finish...
* Watch the weather... Wet/cold weather ain't your friend...
* Apply very light coats... VERY light coats...
* If the brand allows, consider wiping the varnish on with a fine cloth... I learned this (from a book by Sam Maloof) while building a cherry hutch for the wife, and will never, ever, go back to a brush! I just put a first coat of varnish on the deck of the wife's MC 13, and it honestly looks more like a violin than a yak... No kidding. Both the wife and I are stunned by the "evenness" of the finish.
* And always, always test first on scrap from the build...
Hope this helps!
Alan
