For what it's worth, I think you should take another look at Jim's idea... I think it's a good one... (http://www.clcboats.com/shoptips/shoptips_skeg.php).
I've built and used boats with both fixed and removable keels/skegs, and "removable/retractable" is the only way to go in my opinion. And this is especially true if there's a chance you might want to explore that mysterious little winding creek.
My 16' Bolger Peapod has a completely removable keel, and I wouldn't have it any other way...
