Yes, a vang would help for sure, even for average sailing conditions.
Sailing upwind first - at least when not heading for a destination - is a mantra in our family. I wish I had cut the main halyard a little bit longer so it could have been used as a topping lift to hold the boom and yard out of the cockpit in the event we have to surf home on jib alone.
I'm not sure that reefing underway would be impossible. Our PMD seemed pretty darn stable, but that might be due to our "Bolger ballast bottom" (four layers of 'glass in some places). It was only a bit wobbly at times...
