While Yakima and Thule have great products, also check out the Avalanche club site:

The folks there have a lot of great ideas to enhance the Avalanche, and there may be folks who have experience with the Yakima/Thule products or their own home made stuff. I have a bike rack from TexAvy that works great and am thinking of a way to use it to rack a boat.
