Insurance?

I just got off the phone with my State Farm insurance agent. I called to ask about getting some insurance for my Passagemaker dinghy against damage, theft and liability. Things were going well until it came out that it was a home made boat. At that point, he really balked. He wanted me to send him photos, info about CLC, and my blood type. (o.k., not that last one.) But he seemed a little dubious about writing a policy.

Now, I am not in a coastal location, and if it isn't a policy for a jet-ski or a bass boat, he probably has never done anything like this before. I had intended to get the policy through the same guy as my house and car insurance. But I'm thinking maybe I have to try out a specialty nautical insurance underwriter?

Anyone else considered insurance? What has been your experience? If you have it, what is the ballpark costs for coverage?
