Measuring for bulheads

I'm building the Eastport Pram and am new to the entire boatbuilding process. I have a simple (probably stupid) question for those more proficient....when the instructions say to place a bulkhead 52 inches from the bow, how do you measure that distance accurately? I strung a line bow to stern and measured along it, but it still seems like an approximation. Any help would be appreciated.
