I used the alternate method drilling through the hull and endpour. I drilled just until the point of the bit penetrated the far side of the hull which indicated the center of the hole. Then I finished drilling in the opposite direction to minimize any chipping or breakout of the wood. Finally I touched up the bare wood with a coating of epoxy to seal everything.
